With the advancement of technology comes the ability for nearly any home to afford an internet connection and a home computer. While it is great that these tech devices are no longer out of reach for the average citizen, it surfaces the need to discuss tech safety with your kids.
Safety and Privacy
Start by discussing the importance of having every online account protected to the best of their ability. If you are chatting with your younger kids, then you will be the one setting these safety settings up. Be certain that your kids know not to give out their full real name, address or phone number regardless of who the person says they are. Be adamant on letting your kids know they should always come to you when someone approaches them online, regardless of how safe they feel this person may be.
Social Media Safety
Depending on the age of your kids, social media safety may come into play. Most platforms don’t allow kids under age 13, but there are some great starter social sites like Club Penguin out there that allow younger kids super monitored interaction online to help guide them towards safe social media practices online before they get into the big platforms. Teach your kids how to set privacy levels on all social media sites and inform them that once something has been put out on the internet, there is always a cached version available to anyone. It’s not something you can ever take back simply by clicking delete.
Last, but certainly not least, start asking questions of your kids. Learn what it is they have already been taught through peers and at school. These days most schools have technology classrooms and discuss the importance of being safe online. Tech safety has become something that is just as important a topic as ‘stranger danger’ in your day to day life. Find out what questions your kids have and what they already know as a means to guide the discussion of tech safety in the appropriate direction.
